The Maritime and Port Bureau of the MOTC created the first pilot program for artists to take up residence in Matsu Dongju Island Lighthouse as "lighthouse keepers" for artistic creation. The first resident artist Yu-Song Wang published his works on June 30 after living there for one month and the works generated positive feedback from the local community. The second group of artists Wei Lu and Mu Tuan will stay for two weeks starting from July 8.
The publication of the works in the evening on June 30 attracted many locals as well as members of the Dapu Plus+ Life Exchange program. Yu-Song Wang decorated the exhibition room with blueprints and showed his drawing tools and materials to bring a new experience to the visitors. He used a flashlight, the only source of light onsite, and explained the works himself. He led visitors to explore the story behind each work and instilled "life" into the objects onsite. The visitors' experience was like stepping into the set of "Night at the Museum" as they experienced the boundless vitality of the works. Yu-Song Wang stated that "light" was the core of the creation because the blueprints were developed with chemical reactions generated by light. After giving a tour of the works and sharing his creative ideas, he led the visitors outside to show a creation of lights and shadows. Visitors placed flashlights on the grass and experienced the art light and shadows projected onto the lighthouse. The unique portrayal of the wonders of the earth was staggering and the air was filled with vibrancy and fun.
The second group of artists are a young couple who plan to integrate elements of the ocean into the residence. They will decorate the space with wind chimes, fabrics woven in the style of Dongju Island, and items found on the island. They will also set up a tea drinking space with the aim of interacting with the people, learn about their stories, and turn the stories into inspiration for their works.
The Maritime and Port Bureau said that this round of artists living at the lighthouse is drawing to a close. Visitors in Matsu during the summer vacation should use the opportunity and visit the Dongju Island Lighthouse to see the artists’ creations.
