Based on the premise of “people-oriented and revitalization of monuments”, the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) will join hands with the Kaohsiung City Government and the Taiwan International Ports Corporation to revitalize the overall appearance of the Kaohsiung Lighthouse Park and the surrounding environment this year by continuing to promote the Kaohsiung Lighthouse renovation project phase II. In particular, certain staff standby rooms will be converted into light meal and snack kiosks and a “light meal and seaview wooden platform” will be set up to offer visitors a place to enjoy the sight of the lighthouse beams illuminating the sea from a close distance. Extension of the opening hours into the evening hours is also in the planning. The walls of the lighthouse and offices will be decorated with soft lights, in order to transform the lighthouse park into the top choice for taking strolls and enjoying the view of Kaohsiung at night. To ensure the safety of visitors, the park will be temporarily closed during the construction period.
The MPB said that the Kaohsiung Lighthouse, formerly known as the Cihou Mountain Lighthouse or Cihou Lighthouse, is the only lighthouse in Taiwan that is co-constructed with a fort. It was originally a white quadrangular lighthouse built in 1883 out of red brick. After the opening of the Takao Port in 1916, the Japanese converted it into a white octagonal concrete lighthouse in line with the expansion of the Port of Kaohsiung area. During World War II, it was shot at by machine gunfire, but it did not damage its light-emitting operation, bearing witness to the development history of Takao Port - the predecessor of the Port of Kaohsiung.
The MPB further explained that since 2017, the Kaohsiung Lighthouse has been undergoing phase I of the renovation project in accordance with the “Taiwan Area Lighthouse Renovation and Development Plan” to strengthen the lighthouse premises and improve the old facilities. It was then followed with the renovation project phase II for the development of regional tourism. The planning includes landscaping, space configuration for light meal and snack catering contractors, night lighting, and trail improvement projects. The project began its implementation on August 3 and will be completed by the end of February 2022. Considering the frequent access of vehicles and machineries to the park during the construction period, the lighthouse park will be closed during the construction period for the safety of visitors.
According to the MPB, the revitalized Kaohsiung Lighthouse will offer visitors a place to enjoy a light meal while admiring the view of Shoushan and the British Consulate at Takao in the distance. The Lighthouse also overlooks the waterways and the ships between Cihou Mountain and Shoushan, as well as provides a choice location for viewing the sunrise and the sunset. Come here to experience the beauty and prosperity of the port city of Kaohsiung, the warmth of the people and culture, and the rich history. After the project is completed, visitors are welcome to come explore and discover the story behind the lighthouse, climb up to the seaview platform, and enjoy a cup of coffee while being caressed by the sea breeze and admiring Kaohsiung’s culture and people.
