To maintain the two national heritage sites with over 100 years of history, Dongju Lighthouse and Dongyin Lighthouse, the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) has conducted lighthouse restoration and equipment refurbishing operations. Starting in 2017, the study, planning and design, and implementation of traditional techniques began and the project budget is NT$22 million. Parts of the facility were closed due to restoration work since March 20, 2019. The restoration work and the entire facility is now complete and reopened to the public for tours.
Dongju Lighthouse is located in the Northeast Coast of Dongju island in Lienchiang county. It is a white, cylindrical granite structure and was constructed in 1872. The lighthouse is almost 150 years old. The Dongyin Lighthouse is situated in the hillside to the east of Lehua village on Dongyin island. The lighthouse is constructed with white round bricks and the fan shaped base is made of granite. The lighthouse was built in 1904 and is almost 116 years old. Over the years, additions, renovations, and repairs have been made to the lighthouse and the surrounding structures in the site in response to navigational safety and operation requirements. However, most of the materials and structures have reached the end of their life cycles. To maintain normal operations of the lighthouse, the MPB has renovated the main lighthouse structure, dome, and lightning protection equipment. In addition, renovations were also made to the structure, electrical wiring, and fire systems of the surrounding structures. The project aims to increase public safety of the structures and preserve maritime culture assets.
In the misty May and June, the Blue Tears of Matsu is the most popular attraction. The island contains the 100-year-old, historic Dongyin and Dongju lighthouses. These tall buildings do not only guide returning ships but are also important landmarks which attract visitors to the island. During this restoration project, the MPB established a cultural history exhibition hall in the Dongju Lighthouse and interactive multimedia facilities in the Dongyin Lighthouse. These new facilities aim to show the public the diverse history surrounding these lighthouses. The MPB is providing visitors with a friendly and diverse recreation experience.
