The Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has launched the “Single Container Enquiry Service” app in April 2021 available on Android and Apple iOS systems to provide a channel for container transportation operators and cargo drivers to make inquiries in real time. This app was created in view of the feedback from container transportation operators that cargo drivers should be able to conveniently access the weight information of containers in real time, so as to enhance container transport information retrieval and implement road safety.
According to the MPB, due to the relatively minor impact of the pandemic in Taiwan, industrial and consumer demand for import and export container transportation remained high. Statistics showed that there were 14.59 million TEU of import and export containers in 2020, which was only a slight decrease of 4% compared to 2019. Furthermore, this also highlights the importance of container weight information accessibility of import and export containers under the sea-land intermodal transport system. By using the “Single Container Enquiry Service” app, cargo drivers can scan the container number at the port through the optical recognition function in their smart phones to check the weight of the containers in real time, thereby reducing the occurrence of overweight containers. The MPB has also held three seminars on the use of the Android app for container transportation operators, shipping operators, and shipping agencies in early April 2021. The Apple iOS system version of the app was also launched on April 22, and is now fully available to container transportation operators and drivers.
The MPB stressed that container weight is an important factor affecting road safety, and the Bureau will continue to refine the app service functions to provide more convenient services to frontline cargo drivers and other operators. At the same time, the MPB also requests ship operators, cargo owners, and transportation operators to comply with the container land transport weight regulations for cargo shipping, consignment delivery, and cargo transportation to ensure the safety of road users.
