Guosheng Lighthouse is located in Qigu District, Tainan City on a sandbar formed by alluvial rivers of West Taiwan. The sandy soil scoured from the Taiwan Strait creates a unique desert scene and it is known as "Taiwan's Sahara Desert". Guosheng Lighthouse towers above the sandbar like a giant in the middle of the desert. However, it has structural safety issues as the tower is more than 50 years old and has been eroded by sea winds for decades. The Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) drew up plans for the reconstruction project in 2020. Construction is expected to begin in March 2022 and will be completed before the end of 2022.
Guosheng Lighthouse is also known as “Qigu Lighthouse” and is located at the westernmost point of Taiwan. The Lighthouse, along with Sandiaojiao Lighthouse (east), Eluanbi Lighthouse (south), and Fuguijiao Lighthouse (north), are known as the four lighthouses at the extreme points of Taiwan. It was originally built in 1957 on Wanziliao Sandbar in Guosheng Port and its original structure consisted of white square wooden boards and bar steel frames. Due to subsequent erosion of the site by the sea tide, the lighthouse sank into the sea and the sandbar was lost. In 1969, Guosheng Lighthouse was ravaged by a typhoon and collapsed. In the following year, it was relocated to the top of Dingtoue Sandbar nearby and rebuilt as a tall cone of steel frames 32.7 meters high with black and white bands.
The MPB states that it has negotiated with local associations and Tainan City Government several times for the reconstruction project and obtained opinions from all stakeholders. The new lighthouse will bear the name of its location, Qigu, and will have seven intersecting black and white reflecting panels intended create a narrative for the lighthouse. The restored Guosheng Lighthouse will become a beacon in the midst of the Dingtoue Sandbar—the perfect location to take photos and check in, either at day or at night. The MPB hopes that it will attract more visitors and become a secret site for desert-themed Instagram posts by internet celebrities.
